Selected Project Details

Melanie Warner ‘Paper Bag Hats’
Using paper carrier bags found in Muji and O’Neill, Melanie has constructed a range of hats to be displayed within the shops. She has experimented with the physical structure of the hats, using various techniques to achieve quite dramatic results. By breaking the paper down into papier mâchè then layering the strips, she has created a hard, shiny surface on which to build up the hats using pieces of the bags that have been twisted, folded, cut and rolled. Melanie’s work takes something that is often discarded or pushed to the back of a drawer and gives it a whole new life, giving value to something we see everyday but often overlook.

‘Mug Tree’
Installed in the tree inside the sculpture at the Exchange Square entrance to Triangle is a selection of inspirational quotes written by children from King David High School and Delamere Forest School. The children were asked to write words people might like to contemplate as they sit and have a cup of coffee, words that would be uplifting and thought provoking. Inspired by the words of Thomas Fuller: ‘One that would have the fruit must climb the tree’, Melanie has attached mugs to the higher branches of the tree, representing fruits and creating a giant ‘mug tree’. Each mug is inscribed with the words ‘Reach for the sky…’ Be inspired: start at the bottom and reach for the sky!

Laura Whinyates ‘Consuming’
Laura Whinyates is interested in the concept of consumerism and how it touches all of our lives. She is working with several retailers, producing outfits for each, made from in-store barcodes. The process involves printing the barcode several times onto thin paper and then ironing the barcodes onto interfacing to produce the fabric used to make the clothes. All of the outfits are specific to a particular shop and influenced by in-store branding and themes, with tiny details, such as embroidery which references the aesthetic quality of the original clothing. The photography, seen on banners hung in the arches of the top level of Triangle, depict the outfits in a style used in fashion photography and has a composition influenced by the style of each retailer. You can see the outfits displayed in Vicky Martin, Up & Running, Joy, O’Neill, Lambretta and Westworld.
